Mission Statement

The Rahway High School Bands Program consists of students in instrumental music and in color guard. All high school students in grades 9 - 12 are eligible to participate. We proudly offer experiences on the concert stage, jazz idiom, and on the competitive marching band field.

The Concert Band performs throughout the school year. The ensemble presents a variety of repertoire, including the standard, "cherished" band repertoire, classic marches, as well as new "cutting edge" works. All students within the instrumental music program receive the foundation of their musical education from their experiences in the Concert Band.

Our program supports two full jazz ensembles, celebrating the great American art form of jazz music. Students learn and perform in a variety of styles, studying the great masters of swing and latin music, as well as the contemporary jazz sound. Students recieve an understanding on the importance and method of how to improvise (spontaneous composition). Rahway High School Jazz Ensembles have performed with some wonderful guest artists, over the past ten years, including: grammy award winner, Chuck Mangione, Late Night with David Letterman's Al Chez, trombonist Eddie Bert and "Doc" Harold Reynolds, Andy Fusco, Warren Vache, and more . . .

Rahway High School Marching Band members become part of a precision performing unit that performs in approximately four competitions and a championship event each season. The Marching Band also performs publicly in community events, parades, and at school events, such as football games and pep rallies. The band also travels out of state, including USSBA Championships in Scranton, PA (2001) & Allentown, PA (2002-03), Walt Disney World (1998, 2000, 2003, 2005), and Boston, Mass (2002).

The Rahway High School Marching Band develops students in music, marching, dance, and physical education, and provides an overall arts and cultural experience. Numerous instruments, dance techniques, costumes, and props are incorporated into band shows.

Marching Band offers growth and development for students throughout the season. In practice and performance, students are instilled the importance of dedication, responsibility, organization, leadership, teamwork, loyalty, and above all, friendship.

Marching Band offers many of the same features and benefits as other sports, including competition, scoring, penalties, time limits, practice, and the process of improving themselves and their unit throughout the season. The RHS Marching Band is able to offer one thing that many other sports cannot in the sense that EVERYONE PLAYS, ALL THE TIME!

The Rahway High School Band Program is another example of the strong fine & performing arts programs that are supported within the Rahway Public Schools, by parents, teachers, administration, and the Rahway Board of Education.
